Bandit - Racoon
A reference photograph from Wildlife Reference Images For Artists inspired this pastel painting of a young raccoon. This adorable young raccoon peeking over a log reminded me of a family of raccoons passing through my yard every night.
I used an 8-inch x 10-inch PastelMat and soft pastels to capture this little raccoon's fur, eyes, and inquisitive nature. I sketched the primary lines with graphite and then worked in layers of color, blending some colors with my finger and smudging others with a blending stump. I made sure to layer the colors from dark to light to create a realistic fur effect.
Raccoons are known for their sharp eyes and inquisitive nature, so I wanted to capture the light shining in the raccoon's eyes.
