Sunny American Goldfinch
American Gold Finch is an easy-to-identify bird found throughout much of North America. They are most easily spotted in open fields and meadows, where they feed on the seeds of weeds and grasses. These small birds have bright yellow bodies, brown wings, and black markings around their eyes and beaks. The males also have a red face patch on their heads during the breeding season.
I was inspired to create this pastel painting of a finch perching on a branch because of its unique coloring and because I have seen these finches in my own backyard. This painting allows me to capture the beauty of this species for all to enjoy. I used soft pastels and drew on dark-toned paper, allowing me to create varied depths of color and texture. The details of its feathers are also highlighted with different shades of pastel pencils.
