Barred Owls are known for their distinctive call, described as a “who-cooks-for-you” hoot. They are typically solitary or in pairs and can be found living in old-growth forests and suburban areas with mature trees. Barred Owls have broad diets that include small mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and other birds. They hunt mainly from perches, swooping down to capture their prey, and are extremely adaptable predators. They can also be seen foraging on the ground and wading in shallow water. Barred Owls are typically nocturnal, so they may not often be seen during the day; however, they are often heard calling out across the countryside at night. During nesting season, the female typically lays between 1 and 5 eggs which she will incubate for about 28 days. The young are cared for by both parents until they become independent at 10 to 12 weeks old. Barred Owls have a life expectancy of around 10 years in the wild.
I created this pastel painting of a barred owl perching on a tree branch to capture its majestic beauty. The painting depicts the barred owl's unique colors and features, such as its dark eyes, white throat patch and streaks, and dark barring on its wings and tail.
